HUA Mentorship Program

Launched in October 2020, the HUA mentorship program matches underclassmen who are majoring or minoring in history with qualified and successful upperclassmen in their area of concentration. 
  • If you are an underclassman interested in getting a mentor please look through the mentor catalog below. If you see an upperclassman who matches your interest/concentration and would like to get in contact with them please reach out to the HUA email (huaundergrads@gmail.com) and we will officially match you.
  • If you are an upperclassman and are interested in becoming a mentor for the Spring 2021 semester please send a brief bio, including your year, area of concentration, and any other facts about you which may be helpful to an underclassman to the HUA email listed above

Meet the Mentors:

Andrew Forschler: forscha@terpmail.umd.edu 

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  •  Andrew is a senior double majoring in History and Theater with a minor in Secondary Education. Also, he has completed the department’s honors program and is in the process of receiving the East Asian Studies certificate.

 

Beverly Val-Addo: bvaladdo@terpmail.umd.edu

  • Concentration: African History

  • Beverly is a senior transfer student majoring in History with a minor in Black Women’s Studies. She is the President of the African Students Progressive Action Committee and she serves on the Arts and Humanities Dean’s Advisory Board. Beverly also has experience with UMD’s study abroad programs and used her time abroad to fulfill some of her concentration requirements.

 

Carly Holmes: carlymaries16@gmail.com

  • Concentration: African-American History

  • Carly is a junior who transferred to UMD her sophomore year from North Carolina Central University. She is a double major in History and Secondary Education and will be applying to the College of Education’s Professional Program in the Fall of 2020. She is currently a member of the COE’s Undergraduate Assembly. She is interning at Blake Learning Solutions creating tour information and curriculum for Arlington National Cemetery. She hopes to become a school teacher after graduating so she can teach diverse history to diverse students, and later get a Ph.D. in Urban Education Policy to help students in urban schools.

 

Daniel Williams: dwilli34@umd.edu 

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  • Daniel is a junior double majoring in History and applying to the College of Education to major in Secondary Education Social Studies. During his time at UMD, Daniel has been involved with Survivor: Maryland as a player and as a member of the crew, was part of the Freshman Connection program, as well as tutoring in history for K-12 students.

 

Elizabeth Allsopp: eallsopp@umd.edu 

  • Concentration: Medieval History

  • Elizabeth is a junior double majoring in History and Biology. She also has experience with declaring as a history major after freshman year.

 

Gabby McCoy: gmccoy@terpmail.umd.edu (currently has a mentee)

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  • Gabby is a senior History major with a minor in public leadership. During her time at UMD, she has worked as a tour guide,  and was involved in the Public Leadership College Park Scholars Program, and is the Vice President of the Department’s Undergraduate Association. She has also spent time interning for the National Archives’ Office of Education and Public Programs. After graduation, she plans to earn a Ph.D. in History and work as a Professor and writer.

 

Helyn Steppa: hzsteppa@gmail.com (currently has a mentee)

  • Concentration: Religion 

  • Helyn is a senior transfer from Barnard College with a major in History. In addition to being a transfer student, Helyn took a gap year before starting at UMD and is familiar with the challenges of transitioning from a gap year back into collegiate life. She is also passionate about mental health and hopes to pursue a career in the field of academia.

  • History Minor: Focus on European and American History

  • Jacob, pronounced Ya-cub, is a senior transfer student majoring in Communication with a double minor in Art History and History. He is in the process of adding the Criminology & Criminal Justice Major. He transferred to UMD in January 2019 from Montgomery College with his AA Communication Degree after taking a break from higher education. He is a great resource for any returning or transfer student, or any student interested in switching or adding additional majors or minors.

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  • Jake is a junior History major with a minor in business. He also has recently started in the History Department’s Honors Program and is a great resource for students interested in applying to the program.

 

Jessica Mahoney: j.mahoney1124@gmail.com 

  • Concentration: U.S. history

  • Jessica is a senior transfer student from the University of Kentucky with a major in history and a minor in human development. In addition, she is the President of the Department’s Undergraduate Association and a writer for Janus, the Undergraduate Humanities Journal, she has also been a teaching assistant within the department. Jessica has also spent time working with local schools as a mentor and tutor. After graduation, she plans to earn a Ph.D. in education policy.

 

Madison (Maddie) Palardy: mpalardy@terpmail.umd.edu

  • History Minor: Focus on Medieval European History

  • Maddie is a senior majoring in Chemistry and minoring in History. She transferred to UMD in Fall 2018 from Howard Community College. While at HCC, she went on two study abroads to France and Ireland.  She previously interned at the Food and Drug Administration as an ORISE Fellow. She is currently applying to graduate school in hopes of getting a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry.

 

Marjorie Antonio: mantoni2@umd.edu

  • Concentration: Women and Gender

  • Marjorie is a junior double majoring in History and American Studies, with a double minor in Asian American Studies and Art History. She is the Editor and Chief of Stylus, a Journal of Art and Literature, the student curator of the NextNOW Fest, and the Filipino Cultural Association's FCArts director. In addition, she is a docent at the Stamp Gallery and was involved in CIVICUS and Writers' House living and learning program. She is interested in the museum side of history, with a specific focus on art and media.

 

Megan Hutchinson: mhutchy6@umd.edu 

  • Concentration: British and Western European history 

  • Megan is a junior History major and has a double minor in Human Development and Secondary Education. She also has experience changing majors during college. 

 

Mihir Desai: mihirdesai956@gmail.com 

  • History Minor, focus on European and American History

  • Mihir is a senior majoring in Math with a double minor in History and Computer Science. He brings the unique perspective of being a History minor and would be a great resource for anyone interested in getting involved in the department as a minor.

 

Paige Hawksworth: phawk@terpmail.umd.edu 

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  • Paige is a senior earning a double degree in History and Government and Politics, as well as a minor in Sustainability Studies. In addition, she has completed the Department’s Honors Program. She is also enrolled in the joint BA/MPP program and hopes to pursue a career in environmental law.  

 

Rebecca Mollet: rmollet@umd.edu 

  • Concentration: Politics, Law, and Government

  • Rebecca is a junior transfer student from Frederick Community College, where she earned her associate’s degree in History.  She has a double major in History and Government and Politics and a double minor in Law and Philosophy. She is also a writer and editor for Janus, the Undergraduate Humanities Journal. She is interested in either earning a Ph.D. in Political Science or going to law school.

 

Samantha Hargis: shargis@umd.edu 

  • Concentration: U.S. History

  • Samantha is a junior with a double major in History and Communications with a minor in Global Terrorism. In addition, she is currently involved in the Department’s Honors Program and plans to use her experience as a history major to pursue a career in law.

  • Concentration: British and Western European History

  • Tom is a senior double majoring in History and Journalism. In addition, he was the previous President of the Department’s Undergraduate Association.

Oscar Saywell: obbs@outlook.com

  • Concentration: Medieval and Early Modern Studies 

  • Oscar is a senior History major currently completing his thesis on historical representations of non-whiteness and their place in the medieval field. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Janus, the university’s undergraduate history journal. He is a great source for anyone looking for advice transitioning out of Freshman Connection, having started out Undeclared in the program.
